Most people think they know what the DNA of African Americans would show. Broad West African ancestry, filtered through slavery, end of story. That is not what the science found. The genetic data is more specific, more complicated, and in several places more disturbing than the general history suggests. And some of what it reveals was not supposed to be recoverable at all. This is what the research actually shows.
