I've been using Oak catkins for coal extender a lot lately. I wonder if they'd also work for char material. In today's experiment, I solar ignited some catkins with a polished aluminum can, got a good hot fire going, and cooked up a char tin full of them. As you can see from the thumbnail, it made a nice puck of char material. Come see me test it out with the flint and steel technique. I used quarts and a homemade steel for some interesting results.
