So the easiest way I've found to find nymphs quickly is loading a new world (higher spawn rate pre hardmode) (Expert worlds have 100% chance to drop metal detector as opposed to 50%) and going directly to the snow biome since they apparently have a higher spawn rate there. Then using a hunter potion and just digging around until you find one. Takes a bit longer than this sometimes for sure but it's an easy way to get a metal detector.
