Hey there, neighbors, Kevin with etrailer, and today we're gonna be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Tekonsha breakaway kit with battery charger here on our enclosed trailer. So our neighbor came to us today because their previous breakaway kit has seen some better days. If you take a look at it, it is pretty sun-faded and the buttons that used to be here for checking the charge are no longer in use. They are completely ripped off and gone. So while this was still working, there's a good chance that water could get in there and the circuit board for this is right behind it. So we're taking a big risk that this might get damaged.

There might be a shortened circuit board. And then when we are out towing our trailer, we might not have this actually work in the event of a breakaway, which is going to lead to a whole lot more damage for those around it and for the trailer itself. So swapping this out is kind of a necessity as it would be for any other trailer that is over 3,000 pounds. So this box is gonna have a top load design. You would have to cut the zip tie that they'll have you install and move the bracket out of the way to actually get to that battery if you ever needed to replace it.

But this is going to have that five amp hour battery to send enough power back to our brake assemblies in the event of a breakaway. So that way it's going to hopefully stop our trailer while it's out on the road and not allow it to keep moving. Now with these, there are different styles. There's, you know, side load, top load, front load. There's also going to be ones where it's gonna have a higher amperage or lower amperage.

So it's really important that you're determining how many axles you have with brakes and then making sure that yours is going to be the right fit for it. So with this one, this one's good for a single axle all the way up to a quad axle. So this should have you pretty well-covered. But if this was a larger trailer, maybe you have disc brakes like a fifth wheel, you might wanna go with a larger battery size. There are options like a 10 amp hour battery.

That would be a better choice. Just make sure you have enough stopping power to really bring that trailer to a stop so that way it's not running into anything else. So this kit is going to come with the mounting bracket, the battery, the battery box, the charger that's going to be inside the battery box, and then also a breakaway switch. What it's not gonna come with is any mounting hardware because they don't know exactly what you're going to be mounting this to. In our case, it's a little bit of a unique design because there's a trailer tongue box on here for tools and it also houses our actual battery. So we had to get a little creative. We did reuse the hardware that was on here originally from our previous breakaway battery, but the case for you might be just a tad bit different. So I would kind of scope out how yours is if you already have one, see if you can just recreate that, and make sure the mounting pattern for the bracket actually matches up to the previous one that you had. Or if you're fine with doing a little DIY and drilling new holes, just make sure that you fill up the old ones to not have any water leak in there and kind of corrode anything up. Aside from that though, it is a pretty standard setup here. You're tying into your junction box and then also into your trailer's battery. So this is pretty easy to do. In our case, it had a little bit more just because our junction box was mounted underneath of our toolbox, so it's a little bit harder to get to. So some things you might need to also pick up would be some butt connectors. I would go for some heat shrink ones so that way you can heat those up, get those to shrink down, and protect all of your wiring just because this is living outside of our trailer. Ring terminals, that is a little dependent on what style of junction box you have. The junction box we have in here has posts that require a ring terminal to actually be able to hook up to. So you might not need that, but it could be an option depending on what you actually have in there. Most trailers from the factory are just gonna have a metal junction box and usually they'll use like a crimp-style connector or just wire nuts on there. So just scope out what you had beforehand and then maybe pick up a little bit of extra wire. So we did have to
