The Metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint connects each of your toes (a phalangeal bone or a phalanx) to a long bone in your foot (a metatarsal bone). There are five MTP joints on each foot but the term “MTP joint” is often used to refer only to the big toe joint, and this is because the big toe MTP joint is the one that most frequently causes problems.
Some conditions that we see as a result of MTP joint dysfunction include: Bunions, Turf Toe, Osteoarthritis, and Gout. Treatments for these conditions often include high-dose steroid injections to calm inflammation and sometimes surgery to reposition the bones, but these options fail to address the surrounding structures and underlying causes of pain and dysfunction. Some regenerative medicine doctors will treat these conditions with injection therapy, but they often fall short because they fail to address the capsule, which is essential to actually helping this patient have the best outcome and reduce or eliminate pain. In this video, I explain more.
