High heels weren’t invented for fashion - or for women. In the 1500s, Persian soldiers who fought on horseback wore heels to help them stay firmly in the stirrups while aiming their bows. These heels weren’t about beauty - they were a war tool, a grip-tech invention meant for battlefield stability. When Persian royalty visited Europe in 1599, their heels fascinated the elite. Suddenly, European aristocrats began adopting the style as a symbol of status, masculinity, and power.
Soon, red soles, embroidery, and elevated designs became court fashion - so much so that Louis XV declared red heels exclusive to royal dress codes. Women didn’t start wearing heels until much later, and even then, it was to mimic the masculine power heels had come to represent. Over time, as military need faded, men’s heels shrank and women’s heels grew - not out of function, but fashion. What started as a soldier’s tool turned into a symbol of elite femininity.
