The music world has lost a true legend. 💔
Rob Hirst, the powerful heartbeat behind Australian rock icons Midnight Oil, has passed away at the age of 70 after a brave battle with pancreatic cancer.

Diagnosed in 2023, Rob fought with incredible strength and grace for nearly three years. On January 20, Midnight Oil confirmed his passing, sharing that he died peacefully, surrounded by love — finally free from pain. 🌿
They described his journey as “a glimmer of tiny light in the wilderness.”

Rob wasn’t just a drummer — he was a founding member, a songwriter, and the rhythmic soul of Midnight Oil since their formation in 1972. His creative fingerprints are all over the band’s most iconic songs, along with his unforgettable backing vocals.

🎶 Midnight Oil’s rise in the early 1980s reshaped Australian rock forever. Their groundbreaking album “10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1” went 7× Platinum, followed by multiple chart-topping albums that cemented their legacy worldwide.

Beyond Midnight Oil, Rob’s passion for music never stopped. He played with Ghostwriters, Backsliders, The Angry Tradesmen, and The Break, proving his love for music knew no limits.

After a hiatus in 2002 and a powerful reunion in 2016, Midnight Oil delivered two more No.1 albums and said goodbye with an emotional final tour in 2022, ending with an unforgettable hometown show in Sydney.

In his own words, Rob reflected on life after his diagnosis, sharing how illness revealed the deep love, friendship, and care that surrounded him — a reminder of how deeply he was cherished. ❤️

Rob Hirst is survived by his wife Leslie Holland and their three daughters.
His rhythm may have stopped, but his music will play forever. 🥁✨
