Mr Charles the Hungarian - Handel’s Rival in Dublin
Handel 'Water Music' arranged by John Walsh (Allegro)
This Linn Records album from Peter Whelan and the IBO reconstructs a concert given in Dublin’s Smock Alley Theatre in May 1742, in which the audience heard new and brilliant sounds from instruments “never heard in this kingdom before”.
The concert was staged by a mysterious entrepreneur known only to us as ‘Mr Charles the Hungarian’. Mr Charles was an eccentric character who travelled to Dublin in 1742, and attempted to make a fortune through putting on performances of Handel's music, while the composer himself was in the city. It features Handel’s ‘Water Music' (Walsh arrangement), Overture to Il Pastor Fido and Concerto Grosso Op.3 No.3, as well as a Concerto for oboe, chalumeau and flute by Hasse.
