In 1993 in the year before the release of his first album, Tom Brier made a tape at home which was labelled "Tom Brier Ragtime Hour 1993". This tape was recently posted on YouTube for the first time and includes 15 rags all chosen by Tom, including a few of his own compositions. Selection #8 was "Sandy River Rag" by Thomas S. Allen, described by Tom as a little-known rag by one of his favorite Boston composers. His performance of it is well worth checking out and appears at 21:26 on the tape.

Thomas S. Allen (1876-1919) was a prolific and versatile composer and songwriter from Boston, Massachusetts. He wrote in various genres including ragtime and also kept busy as a musician and musical director, both locally in Boston and in other cities. His career was cut short by cancer, dying at age 42 in 1919. "Sandy River Rag" was published by Walter Jacobs in 1915 in Boston.
