Some green algae have the ability to capture metal ions from their environment, and sometimes also to synthesize biocidal substances. Aged culture of these algae in a closed system (container) can prevent the growth of other organisms. In this video, the quality of the footage has enabled us to describe Rhizoclonium in some detail. In Europe, the most widespread species of Rhizoclonium algae is R. hieroglyphicum, but the sample shown here comes from South America, where other species are perhaps more common.
