This video documents my process and workflow for changing the furnace filter for a Trane XE 80 furnace.

Winter replace: every 60 days depending on pets, or kids or usage
Summer replace: every 60 - 90 days depending on if your AC is connected to your furnace and usage

My Furnace is about 23 years old and came with my house when I bought it in 2002. It is a Trane XE 80 forced air gas furnace with a traditional or period thermostat (not the fancy new type). Note: Some thermostats require a battery either for backup or to sustain the display. Change the battery about once per year. My thermostat is connect to AC power.

Since I have serviced my furnace I have learned some things and tips. About 10 years ago we experienced flame lock out. The furnace HVAC guy came and told me about the flame sensor and to keep your orifices clean. Since my furnace is in the basement and shares the same room (laundry room) with the dyer the lint, in the air, causes built up on the flame sensor and orifices. When the flame sensor becomes clogged it will shut off the gas and no heat. Hence it is important to keep it clean. The orifices if clogged will not burn correctly and again can cause an issue.



So during my routine checkup I dust the inside and outside, vacuum, and use a can of air duster on the flame sensor and orifices, along with the circuit board. Then I squirt a little electrical contact cleaner on the flame sensor. Be careful the residue can cause flame up, so I dry with air duster, and let it set for about 10 minutes before turning on furnace. Be careful and use at your own risk.


I do a visual and smell inspection on the unit and gas lines looking for any rusting, leaks (from the AC), broken or pinched wires, any dirt or debris, any anything strange.


Then write the date I replaced the filter on the, install, and do a last visual inspection.

Lastly, I turn on the power or heat on the thermostat and watch the furnace burners (with the covers on) light up, they should be a nice blue, and proper sounding and working order. I update my work log sheet next to the furnace with the steps and date so I or someone else knows when it was changed.


This video is to help me incase I get amnesia and do not know what how to change out the furnace or if a helper is helping me. I hope it helps you.

I always make sure my furnace is in perfect working order before the winter season because I do not want to be in the cold, middle of a snow storm without heat.
