Jabal al-Thawr (Mount Thawr)

Jabal al-Thawr (Arabic: جبل ثور) is the mountain containing the cave in which the Prophet (ﷺ) and Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) sought refuge for three days and nights from the Quraysh. This occurred when they secretly left Makkah to emigrate to Madinah.

For three consecutive nights the Prophet (ﷺ) and Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) remained hidden in the cave. During this period, Abu Bakr’s (رضي الله عنه) son, Abdullah, would pass his nights nearby. The young man would return to Makkah very early in the morning so that the Quraysh had no idea that he had slept elsewhere. Each day in Makkah he collected information about the activities of the Quraysh, and each night went back to Jabal al-Thawr to inform the Prophet (ﷺ) and his father Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه).
When they were inside Allah (ﷻ) sent a spider to spin a web from a bush across the entrance to the cave. Allah (ﷻ) also commanded two doves to fly down between the spider and the tree, make a nest and lay eggs. Meanwhile the Quraysh search party scoured the area south of Makkah where the Prophet (ﷺ) and Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) where hiding. They came upon the mouth of the cave, and had they looked down while standing at the edge of the cave, they would have surely found the men they were hunting.
With the Quraysh so close to discovering their hiding place, Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) became very tense about the Prophet’s (ﷺ) safety. The Prophet (ﷺ) reassured him, “How can you be apprehensive about two with whom is a third, especially when the third one is Allah?”

Masjid Nimrah

Masjid Nimrah (Arabic: مسجد نمرة) is located in Waadi Urana. When the Prophet (ﷺ) was at Arafat on his farewell Hajj on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah 10 AH he camped here. After midday he delivered his famous sermon (reproduced below) in the Urana Valley while seated on his camel, after which he led the salah. More than 100,000 Sahabah accompanied him on this Hajj.
Shortly after the Prophet (ﷺ) had finished addressing the people, he received a revelation from Allah: “Today I have perfected your religion for you and completed My favour upon you, and I have chosen Islam as your religion.” [5:3]

Jabal Arafat (Mount Arafat)

Jabal Arafat (Arabic: جبل عرفات) is a small, granite mountain in the plain of Arafat, about 20km from the Ka’bah. Standing at Arafat is a fundamental requirement of Hajj. Pilgrims travel here from Mina on the second day of Hajj (9th Dhul Hijjah). The mountain is also known as Jabal al-Rahmah, meaning “Mountain of Mercy”.

The common meaning of the word Arafat is ‘to know’. After being taken out of Jannah and placed on Earth, it was at Jabal Arafat that Prophet Adam (عليه السلام) and Hawa (عليها السلام) met up again.
Arafah (عرفة) is the name of the day, and Arafat (عرفات) is the name of the land.

History of Queen Zubaida Canal

The city of Mecca was hit by an extreme shortage of water causing the pilgrims to depend on Zamzam water during Hajj days. Caliph Umar bin Khattab (RA) was alarmed by this water shortage situation during his visit to the city for Hajj in the 17th Hijrah. He and other companions of the Prophet (PBUH) tried to come up with a solution but nothing of substance could be achieved. The water difficulty became so massive till the time of Caliph Haroon Al-Rashid that a single bucket of water was worth 20 dirhams.

Queen Zubaida went for Hajj after the death of her husband in 193 Hijrah and was saddened by the water shortage in Mecca. She called up a meeting of engineers and experts from different parts of the world to resolve this crisis. After surveying the area, it was decided to build a canal from the Valley of Hunain, where a water spring fulfilled all the needs of its residents. The valley of Hunnain is the place where the Prophet (PBUH) had fought a battle called Ghazwa-e-Hunnain. However, the land was rocky and barren and it was not possible to build a canal on the surface of the land. The engineers decided to build through a tunnel (aqueduct) with water stations at different intervals, from where people could meet their water needs.

Zubaidah bought the entire valley so that its water resources can be used to the fullest. But to bring water from the mountains was a herculean task and needed enormous funds and manpower for cutting the mountains and digging the rocky hills. Queen Zubaida was determined and ordered to launch the work by saying: “For each stroke of spade and shovel, I’m ready to give a dirham if needed”.
