Toccata no.6 for organ by Frescobaldi, from the Torino manuscript ~1640,
performed by Dale Carr on the triforium organ in the cathedral in Metz on 4 July, 1993
The single original source of this piece attributes it to 'F. Baldi'; it was not published by the composer himself.
The German keyboard tablature preserved in the Biblioteca Nazionale Universitaria of Turin consists of sixteen volumes in oblong quarto format presumably compiled by a single copyist. The notation adopted is that commonly referred to as “new German organ tablature”, which employs the letters of the alphabet to indicate the notes and particular signs to represent octaves and note-values. The compiling of the manuscript began before 25 September 1637 and was concluded after 29 October 1640, as proven by payment indications which appear in the volumes. The source contains approximately two thousand compositions subdivided according to genre: toccatas are in Volumes 1and 2.

The strong internal cadences seem to invite the use of 2 manuals, despite the fact that most Italian organs of Frescobaldi's time had but 1. The organ in Metz also has only 1 keyboard, so I changed registrations as seemed appropriate.
