Damascus steel is known for its flowing patterns, but those patterns come from process—not decoration.
In this video, I walk through the fundamentals of making Damascus steel by layering two different steels, forge welding them into a single billet, and manipulating the layers to create strength and visual character. Along the way, I deal with real issues like uneven heat, layer separation, forge welding challenges, and the risks that come with quenching and etching.
This piece is a proof of concept rather than a finished blade. The etching didn’t reveal the contrast I was hoping for, and that’s part of the learning process. I share what worked, what didn’t, and what I plan to improve the next time I make Damascus.
If you have experience with etching, acids, or Damascus patterns, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments! This is just the beginning, and there’s a lot more to explore.
