In this video, you will learn how to create beautiful abstract pattern art using the sgraffito technique using oil pastels.
I taught this activity to my grade 4 students as part of our Abstract Art unit of inquiry How We Express Ourselves. This activity is one of my students' favourite techniques, it's highly satisfying and therapeutic whilst simultaneously igniting so much creativity, effort, joy, and patience.
Students learn the value of creating art slowly while focusing on the quality of their work, rather than speed and who is "finished first". They appreciate the effort of trying again, learning how to grow from mistakes, and then finishing off with a high sense of achievement and pride in their work.
