🤕 What is spasmodic torticollis—and why does it hurt so much?
Torticollis is when your neck muscles lock up and restrict movement, often making it painful (or impossible) to turn your head.
With spasmodic torticollis, the culprit is usually the SCM muscle on the side of your neck. When it spasms, it pulls your head into a tilted position and won’t let go.
Other times, it’s the levator scapulae (the muscle that helps lift your shoulder blade). When this one locks down, you may wake up after sleeping on your side and suddenly can’t turn your head.
I’ve even had patients come in crying, thinking they’d broken their neck overnight—when really, it was just a muscle in severe spasm.
Treatment?
👉 Chiropractic adjustments
👉 Soft tissue therapy
👉 Stretching and PT techniques
Depending on severity, most patients can go from “locked up” to almost fully functional in just a couple of days.
Neck pain that bad is scary—but it doesn’t always mean something’s broken. Sometimes it’s a muscle screaming for help.
