STORYLINE:

Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived Wednesday at 10 Downing Street, the official London residence of the British Prime Minister, for bilateral talks with Tony Blair.

Putin's meeting with Blair comes a day after the two met at the EU-Russia summit during which the Russian president pledged to be a reliable energy supplier to the EU.

Putin plans to give awards to British rescuers who helped save the crew of a Russian mini-submarine.

The craft had become entangled in undersea cables and fishing nets in the Pacific Ocean and was stranded under 190 metres (600 feet) of water for three days.

Seven Russian crewmen were rescued by the British team, just hours before the oxygen in the mini-submarine ran out.

The British submersible was sent after the Russian navy made an urgent appeal for international help.
