Описание: How news outlets frame generative AI in higher education settings shapes how education stakeholders perceive this emerging technology’s risks and affordances. Employing technological frames as theoretical lenses, this paper explores these perceptions with a specific focus on (mis)trust in generative AI as well as (mis)trust in student-lecturer interactions mediated by this technology. In addition to using technological frames to make sense of depictions, Hoy and Tschannen-Moran’s model of trust is employed to conceptualise trust in education. This trust model reflects the socio-emotional facets of benevolence, openness, and honesty, as well as the cognitive dimensions of reliability and competence. Given that plagiarism tends to dominate debates around the use of AI in educational spaces, this paper also considers the student-lecturer relationship mediated by generative AI from the perspective of Shannon Vallor’s technomoral virtue ethic. Within this framework, it is proposed that in a world in which AI is becoming pervasive, trust can flourish if we shift away from the notion that it is only punitive measures that may be used to address breaches of academic integrity.
