the operatic tenor Francesco Tamagni was the son of a wine-seller who owned a trattoria. His parents encouraged him to learn a profession, but he also took singing lessons with
Cardlo Pedrotti at the Liceo Musicale in Turin. After 1873 he had several small roles at the Teatro Regio in Turin. His first important role was in Verdi's "Un ballo in maschera" on 20 January 1874 in Palermo. He appeared in Ferrara and Venice before he debuted at La Scala in Milan in 1877. On 5 February 1887 he was Otello in the premiere of this opera by Verdi.
He worked at La Scale until 1887 and in 1879 he visited
Argentina. Between 1888 and 1900 he toured in many countries including Russia and the USA. In 1895 and 1901 he appeared at Covent Garden and he sang privately for Queen
Victoria at Windsor Castle. Tamagno never married, but he had a daughter, Margherita. As a single parent he took care of her from her birth. By 1904 his voice had lost its power and he retired to his villa in Varese. He died in Verese in 1905.
