A decade ago, Rwanda’s Grey Crowned Cranes were disappearing. Captured from the wild, they were kept in hotels and people’s gardens. Their population was declining—fewer than 300 remained, and the species faced an uncertain future.
Few knew it was illegal. Fewer still understood the impact. Without urgent action, Grey Crowned Cranes in Rwanda would have been lost forever.
In 2015, Rwanda Wildlife Conservation Association was born—driven by a mission to save the cranes and restore their natural habitat. We worked with communities, government agencies, and conservation partners to remove every crane from captivity. And today, we’ve reversed the situation.
The wild population has more than tripled—and continues to grow.
But we didn’t stop there. Over the last ten years, our mission has expanded—protecting more species, restoring more habitats, empowering communities to become conservation champions as well as educating the next generation of conservationists.
2025 marks 10 years of RWCA. From our Community Rangers who patrol the Rugezi Marsh to the students learning about conservation, every person has played a role in this success. We have come so far, but our work is not done. The next 10 years will be even more critical for the future of Rwanda’s wildlife and its people.
