Lansium domesticum was originally native to the Malay Peninsula .
It is cultivated agriculturally throughout the Southeast Asian region, from southern India to the Philippines because of its fruits. In the Philippines, it is mostly grown on the northern island of Luzon because this plant has a narrow range of optimal conditions for its survival. It is also found in abundance in northern Mindanao in places such as Butuan , Cagayan de Oro , and Camiguín . The « Camiguín » variety is especially sweet and succulent.
Within the area of origin in Asia , this tree is cultivated in Thailand , Vietnam and India , in addition to being found wild in Malaysia. Outside this region, it has been successfully transplanted and introduced into cultivation in Hawaii and Suriname .
