This fort took 20 years to construct and was built at an enormous cost - in both money and lives, Breakwater Fort was one of many built in the late 1800s when Britain feared the strength of the French Navy but the forts were never used for their original purpose and new uses were found for the historic sites.
It later became a signalling station and was also used as an anti-aircraft station during the Second World War.
Most recently it was used as the base for Plymouth diving club up until 1976.
This ancient monument has sat here abandoned ever since, standing the test of time and the force of the surrounding water.
