Husted Wins 2nd BPAA U.S. Open With "Show At The Joe"

Leading qualifier Dave Husted captured his second Bowling Proprietors' Association of America (BPAA) U.S. Open crown via a 266-245 survival test against first-time finalist Paul Koehler. Contested before a PBA record paid attendance of 7,212 at Detroit's Joe Louis Arena, Husted has now collected four PBA wins since announcing his "semi-retired" status last spring. His $46,000 first prize will no doubt comfort the Milwaukie, Ore., pro's waning participation on the Tour.

Both championship finalists started with turkeys, and Husted broke first with a spare in the fourth. Koehler (pronounced Kay-lor), Stuart, Fla., continued striking through six frames, spared, and then doubled. Husted wrenched his back mid-game, but painstakingly struck on his next six shots. Koehler's failure to convert the 5-7 leave in his 10th frame left him with the $24,000 second prize, but a new legion of admirers.

Regarding this bookend "major" accompanying his 1982 BPAA U.S. Open, Husted said, "That title was special because it was my first win and my parents were there. I'm at the point now in my career where I don't know how many times I'll have the opportunity to win. It's time for me to move on with my life and my recent successes haven't changed my desire to spend more time with my family."

The Motor City madness began with fourth-seeded Steve Hoskins downing Dave D'Entremont, 231-212. Hoskins then defeated Parker Bohn III, Jackson, N.J., 256-216, before being turned back by Koehler in a thriller, 278-256. Hoskins, Tarpon Springs, Fla., could have advanced in a roll-off by striking out in his 10th frame, but his first shot didn't connect, and left him with the $14,000 third prize. Bohn earned $10,500 for fourth place.

Husted had compiled an impressive 273-pin margin over second seed Koehler after the 56-game tournament format. The 240-man BPAA U.S. Open field is made up of 144 leading PBA Tour players and 96 BPAA center qualifiers, and who were led by 20th-place finisher Cliff Connors of Tempe, Ariz., who earned a $500 bonus and trophy for pacing the BPAA contingent (which also included four international bowlers) after 32 games.
