Companies often spend a lot of money on training, so it only makes sense that they will want to see what they got back from the training. One of the challenges for any training and development manager, or in indeed any manager seeking to provide training and development opportunities for their staff, is the quantification of the potential return on investment from the development spend.
While it is relatively easy to quantify the costs of training and development, it can be a good deal more difficult to quantity the potential benefits accruing from the investment. Benefits will not only be tangible, but there will also be intangible benefits, and the later intangibles may require longer term tracking of outcomes of the development activities.
However, it is possible to make a start on quantifying ROI in a relatively simple way, and this lesson provides an introduction to a process for quantifying ROI and steps you can take to start making the business case for training and development in your organization.
