Aurora Lighting (http://gb.auroralighting.com/) presents another Animated Infographic that explains efficacy. Before LED lamps, we cared more about wattage than lumens. The higher the wattage, the brighter the light. Now, this isn't the case. LEDs use less wattage than traditional light sources and can produce an equally bright light. When we evaluate LEDs, we have to consider both lumens and wattage. Lumens per watt is an expression of the amount of electrical energy required for an output of light. We measure energy in watts and we measure light output in lumens. One lumen is approximately equal to the amount of light emitted by one candle. Lumens per watt is also known as lamp efficacy. Efficacy allows us to objectively compare different lamps. The higher the lumens per watt, the better. This means a lamp uses less energy to emit the same, or a greater, amount of light. This translates to less money spent for the same amount of light. For example, a traditional incandescent lamp uses one hundred watts to produce seventeen hundred lumens. This lamp emits seventeen lumens per watt. On the other hand, an LED lamp consumes twenty watts and produces sixteen hundred lumens. It emits eighty lumens per watt.
