Father Anastasios begins his sermon by highlighting the significance of Saint Spyridon's faith, despite the Saint not being highly educated. The core focus of his story is Saint Spyridon's crucial role at the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea, where the nature of the Holy Trinity—the hypostasis (three persons) of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit being one God—was debated. The heresy being argued by Arius was that the three were merely one person playing different roles or masks. Saint Spyridon upheld the Orthodox teaching that the Trinity consists of three distinct persons who are yet one, expressing the concept as 1 + 1 + 1 = 1, not 3. This theological understanding, which Spyridon helped to establish, is the source of the Creed recited by the Church today.
To illustrate the Saint's power and divine favor, Father Anastasios recounts a miraculous story: on his way to the council, Saint Spyridon's horses were beheaded in the night by enemies who sought to stop him. Upon discovering this, Spyridon simply instructed his servant to put the heads back on. The miracle was evident the next morning when the horses were alive, but their heads were switched—the brown horse had a white head and vice versa. At the council itself, Spyridon further demonstrated the nature of the Trinity by taking a common brick. He held it up, stating it was one brick, yet composed of three separate elements: earth/sand, water, and fire. When he crushed it, the elements separated, visually proving the theological point that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are three separate entities (persons) that form one unified Godhead. The sermon concludes with a call to follow Saint Spyridon's tremendous faith, asking for his prayers and guidance on the spiritual path.
This sermon was live-streamed on December 12, 2025, from Saint Mark Greek Orthodox Church in Boca Raton, Florida, USA.
