The official opening ceremonies for the Inuvik Tuktoyaktuk Highway (ITH) were held on Wednesday November 15, 2017 in both Tuktoyaktuk and Inuvik. This historic day marked the completion of the first highway to reach Canada’s arctic coast.
The ITH is a remarkable $300 million economic, social, environmental, political, and engineering feat.
The event, which took more than a year to plan, was attended by numerous dignitaries, including: Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada; Federal Minister Amerjeet Sohi, Infrastructure and Communities; Federal Minister Caroline Bennett, Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs; Michael McLeod, NWT Member of Parliament; Premier Bob R. McLeod; Minister Schumann, Industry, Tourism and Investment; many other GNWT, local community government and regional representatives, members of territorial and national media, and an estimated 1500 celebrants from the communities and elsewhere.
