So, what is PSA software? There are four things to really think about when trying to understand what PSA software actually is. The first thing is PPM? Or PSA? PPM (Project Portfolio Management) is really software that's built to manage internal resources for internal projects versus PSA is much more focused on delivering external work, billable work to customers outside of organizations.

The second thing to note here is that performance typically degrades over time. Most services organizations start out as small, focusing on delivering really, really good work for their customers. But as they grow, things get more complex and harder to keep up with—the spreadsheets and point solutions just don't scale.

The third thing to note is where does PSA actually fit inside of a service firm’s overall ecosystem of tools? The way to think about this is it really sits between the CRM and the accounting system, and it serves as the operational backbone for the services organization.

The fourth thing to know is that not all PSAs are built equal. There are numerous PSA tools and solutions that are out there. The landscape is really noisy. You could get everything from a managed-service PSA to a project-focused PSA, to an accounting, construction and engineering- built PSA, all the way through to a PSA for lawn care companies. Really dig in to understand what your business model is and focus on asking those questions to any vendor that you're actually going to engage with.
