10,000 years ago, wacky pranksters Mother Nature and Father Time "Tried a topsy-turvy experiment with the human race." As the voice of Ms. Nature explains, "In a village called Wongo, we made all the women beautiful and all the men brutes. We put all the handsome men in the tribe of Goona, many days march to the south, and we made the Goona girls...well, not beautiful. It didn't work. "But it does provide the crackpot premise for Wild Women of Wongo, an enjoyable goofy cult oddity so amazingly stupid that it's almost profound.
When Engor (JOHNNY WALSH), a prehistoric pretty boy, arrives in Wongo, the women go wild: "He's beautiful! Like the sun!" Engor's equally impressed by the Wongo women, especially Ooma (JEAN HAWKSHAW), the King's daughter: "She is not like those Goona!" Engor's there to ask Wongo to join Goona in repelling an impending invasion of apemen: "Some say they are like apes. These people have big canoes." However, seeing Engor's effect on the Wongo women, the men decide to kill him: "If this man leaves here alive, our foolish women will never forget him!" Instead, the Wongo women rebel, Engor gets away, and the gals are banished from the tribe until one of 'em gets sacrificed to the Dragon God (i.e. gets eaten by an alligator).
Plans change, however, when two "apemen" (who look more like wrestling jocks) attack. Thinking the men of Wongo have all been killed, the Wongo women head to Goona, go gaga over the Goona guys, and decide to cut through the tribal red tape by using ropes and nets to capture themselves some husbands. But wait! The Wongo men aren't dead and also arrive in Goona to meet the truly awful-looking Goona gals, all of which leads to a logic-defying, mind-boggling conclusion and a wink-wink ending. (Actually, it's a wink-wink-wink-wink-wink-wink-wink-wink-wink ending.)
Obviously, anthropology this ain't. It is, however, as close to a nudie-cutie as 1958 would dare: cave-girl costumes but no nudity (except for some long-distance skinny dipping). In essence, Wild Women of Wongo is a glamour-girl cheesecake short expanded to feature length. Surprisingly, it's also populated with an equal amount of muscle-boy beefcake. In fact, third-billed ED FURY ("Wahoo!") was a favorite of such gay-oriented "physique studios" of the Fifties like AMG and Bruce of L.A. before he went to Italy to star in sword-and-sandal epics like Colossus and the Amazon Queen. And, yes, the lovely Wana is former nudie-model ADRIENNE BARBEAU (billed here as "Adrienne Barbour") of Swamp Thing and TV's Maude. But the real star of Wild Women of Wongo is the bizarre setting used for the Temple of the Dragon God: Homestead's, Coral Castle of Florida, a strange tourist attraction built by a reclusive Latvian, which also doubled as the lunar landscape in Doris Wishman's "Nude on the Moon", and can even be spotted in H.G. Lewis' kiddie slick, "Jimmy the Boy Wonder"!
