A trail camera, also known as a game or scouting camera, is a rugged, weather-proof, motion-activated camera designed for unsupervised use outdoors to capture images and videos of wildlife or for surveillance. They are a useful tool for monitoring activity in remote areas.
Trail cameras come in two main types: traditional (non-cellular) and cellular, each with distinct advantages.
A trail camera, or game camera, is a motion-activated, remote camera used for wildlife monitoring, hunting, or security, capturing photos and videos day or night using infrared flash without disturbing animals, often featuring settings for different conditions, and available in cellular or non-cellular models for remote viewing. They work by using Passive Infrared (PIR) sensors to detect heat and movement, triggering the camera to record and then return to standby mode, and are placed in camouflage on trees or posts to observe animals in their natural habitat.
Key Features & Types
Motion-Activated: Detects movement and heat to wake the camera from sleep mode.
Night Vision: Uses infrared (IR) flashes, often "no-glow" to remain invisible to wildlife.
Connectivity: Some are cellular (transmit images wirelessly) while many use standard SD cards.
Settings: Offer photo, video, time-lapse, and time-of-day operation modes.
Applications: Wildlife research, hunting (scouting game), and property security.
