Baby’s brain is growing by leaps and bounds. But is mama having a hard time balancing the new and old?
34 Week Old Baby Milestones 👶
Oh how things change in just the blink of an eye! This week, you may notice that your little one is becoming more cognitively aware that objects and people continue to exist, even when they are not within sight. This phenomenon is knowns as “object or person permanence.”

This is a huge leap in cognitive development! Up until now, he was unaware that when a toy was hiding underneath a blanket, it continued to exist. Now, he is beginning to understand the world around him more and more. A classic exercise you can try at home to test out whether or not he has mastered object permanence:

Place one of his favorite toys under a cloth or blanket. Watch to see if he tries to retrieve the object from underneath the blanket (object permanence mastered!) or if he becomes frustrated or disinterested and moves on (not quite mastered just yet).
Test his reaction when you (briefly) leave the room. If he remains cool, calm, and collected, this may signal that he has mastered person permanence. If he becomes upset at the sight of you leaving, he may not have mastered this just yet.
Don’t fret if he hasn’t picked up this skill just yet. According to psychologist Jean Piaget, this understanding can occur anywhere between 8 to 9 months of age—for many babies this is just the beginning. It’s been a while since life was just about you and your partner. Have you snuck away for a quick date night yet? If not, now may be the time to think about reconnecting with your significant other. After all, this is where it all started, isn’t it?

It’s so healthy for you and your marriage to get some alone time together. Find a trusted babysitter and go out for a nice night on the town. Here are some cool date night ideas:

Take a trip down memory lane: Try going to a favorite restaurant you both shared when you were dating. If you had a favorite date spot (i.e. movies or miniature golf), do it! Reminiscing on old times can really spark that flame.
Try something new: Go outside of your comfort zone and explore a new activity together. Think: a cooking class, tango lessons, or an afternoon on the golf course. You never know, it could become a new joyful hobby you can enjoy together!
Treat yourself: Do something indulgent—you deserve it! Get a couples massage, treat yourself to a tasting menu, or go shopping together.
Keep it simple: If you are able to take your little one out of the house (say grandma’s house?) keep your date night simple, in the comfort of your own home. Make a nice dinner together, open up a bottle of wine, and relax the night away.
There are so many different ways you can reconnect with your partner. And it’s so important to try to make this a habit. Keeping the spark alive is not only healthy for your marriage, it will also keep you, your partner, and even your new sweet baby happy and healthy in a loving, relaxed home!
