In the second video of a four-part series, UTComp founder and CTO Geoff Clarkson discusses damage mechanisms in fiber-reinforced composite materials (FRP) and the American Petroleum Institute's (API) Fitness For Service standard, API 579.
The videos were produced from educational sessions delivered for the Joint ASME/API Fitness-For-Service Committee (FFSJC). In Video 2, Clarkson explains the unique damage mechanisms that affect reliability and performance FRP composite materials.
Clarkson explores five key concepts that reliability engineers must understand with respect to damage mechanisms in FRP:
• Long-term behaviour is non-linear
• Damage reduces material properties
• There is no documented evidence that relates appearance to damage level
• Flexural modulus shows damage
• Retained flexural modulus provides FFS engineering inputs
