Trail running from Manhattan
/ strava
1) Subway in Manhattan to the Harlem 125th Str. Metro North train station, then train to Beacon taking 1h20'. Get off at Beacon. Keep in mind you have the great Dia Beacon art museum right there in case you are interested (one of my favorites, it is housed in a former Nabisco factory, and shows large scale modern art works: https://www.diaart.org/visit/visit-ou.... You end the run at the Cold Spring train station from which you can come back to Manhattan, with more or less the same travel time.
2) In my case the run-to-commute ratio was 3h44' vs. 2h40' so 1.4 only so yes, you invest a lot of time for this run.
3) In alltrails.com there was a connecting trail from Sugarloaf Mountain back to the Breakneck Ridge... but I was unable to find it and got lost. I decided to continue climbing, as when you get to a peak you will certainly meet a trail. It was good reasoning, but moving towards the peak required some rock climbing, which you can dramatically see in the video at 16'20". I am no rock climber at all, and would NOT recommend following my footsteps.
4) I just picked a specific route (you can download the file with the Strava link above, but do not follow my route, you should make yours because I did get lost) but many variations are possible... my run had 3,200 vertical feet of climb. If you like more climbing I would include North Beacon Mountain and South Beacon Mountain.
5) My run-to-walk ratio was 1h49' / 55' = 3.07 but unluckily the auto-pause kicked in thus discounting how much walking I did, so in reality the ratio is much lower. In this area I don't think you can really select much more runnable trails than I did... keep in mind many of the paths are very rocky and do not allow for running.
6) At the very beginning of the run the Scenic Hudson's Long Dock Park and Dennings Park have great views on the Hudson river, really priceless.
7) Both from the train going to Beacon and then later on from up above in the trails, you have great views of Pollepel Island and the ruins of Bannerman Castle, which dates from 1901 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pollepe.... The ruins are fantastic, creepy, gothic... well, I am a big fan.
8) Later on you have a few breathtaking views on the Hudson river from the forest, the best Hudson valley views I have seen. In my opinion those are better than those you can get from Bear Mountain State Park (but I never was on the tippy top of Bear Mountain so I am no expert).
9) From Beacon you have no tourists or hikers, but once you get to Breakneck Ridge and closer to Cold Spring you start to meet a lot of hikers on the trails, but the vibe is great and everybody is having a good time.
