Geena the puppy helps me demonstrate a simplified version of Grisha Stewart's Silky Leash walking technique. The goal is to reverse the dog's natural opposition reflex (pull harder when pulled back) and to teach the dog that even the slightest pressure on the leash is a cue to move in the direction of the pressure instead of away from it. This technique is great for puppies who easily become over-excited on walks, but it also works very well for adult dogs who have a long history of pulling on leash. Dogs with a history of pulling will need to spend longer (possibly a few days' worth of training sessions) at each step.
Step 1) You are seated.
Step 2) You begin to take one step at a time.
Step 3) You begin to take a couple of steps at a time.
Step 4) You continue movement after making turns.
Step 5) You begin to walk in longer straight lines before changing directions, facing forward with your dog at your left (or right) side, and only treat when your dog is on your chosen side.
Don't forget to give plenty of cued sniff breaks (especially in the beginning), and always praise for offered eye contact!
