This is the process I usually do when I want to separate the sand from the plant substrate. I just use this method usually when I am doing a water change. There are several advantages on doing this. It prevents build up of gases in the sand substrate, keeps the tank clean looking and gives the corydora and the geophagus a sandy area to forage for food.
