Optomap: The Amazing Device That'll Change the Way You see the World!

Dr. Hayden saved my life.  That is not a statement you usually hear about an Optometrist but it is so true and I am so grateful for his professional attention.
 
I just passed my one-year anniversary for the successful treatment of a rare, but lethal form of eye cancer, called Retinal Melanoma that occurs with an incidence of about 2000 per year in the USA.  Dr. Hayden found this rare cancer during a routine eye exam in the late summer of 2019.
 
I’ve known Dr. Hayden for 20 years and have been a patient of Dr. Hayden for more than 10 years. In 2013 Dr. Hayden installed a new instrument – Optomap – that would take a clear and detailed picture of the retina.  Using this painless imaging device, he saw a “freckle” in my right eye that did not seem unusual.  Two years later another retinal scan was done, and the “freckle” was still there.
 
Fast forward to late July 2019 and my wife, Debbie, and I were sitting in Dr. Hayden’s office discussing the value of another retinal scan.  I was reluctant—honestly, I did not think that the $35 for the test was worth it, but Debbie insisted that I do the scan.  Imagine our surprise when we were sitting in the exam room looking at a large flat screen TV with a “textbook”’ image of a retinal melanoma, and Dr. Hayden brought up my scan of my right eye and they looked identical.  Boy was the test worth it, and it was a very quiet moment in the exam room for about 30 seconds as we all caught our breath.  Dr. Hayden suggested that I have it looked at by another eye doctor who specializes in cancers of the eye.  In late August 2019 I had a thorough exam at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston that confirmed the presence of a small sized retinal melanoma in my right eye.  Very quickly I had surgery to mark the borders of the tumor, followed by 5 days of proton beam irradiation to treat the tumor.  Because Dr. Hayden had identified this cancer early in its growth, and now have no evidence of the cancer spreading to other organs, my 5-year relative survival rate is greater than 95%.
 
So, it is not hyperbole to say that “Dr. Hayden saved my life”.  As a patient and cancer survivor, I cannot stress the importance of annual retinal scanning and that will be a staple in all of my family’s eye care from now on.
