The Green Belt in Japanese Jujitsu typically marks the stage where a student transitions from foundational techniques to more advanced applications of leverage, control, and tactical awareness. At this level, practitioners refine previously learned movements while expanding their repertoire of throws, locks, groundwork, and striking combinations. The syllabus focuses on improving precision, timing, and the ability to respond fluidly to different types of attacks.
A core element of the Green Belt syllabus is the introduction of more dynamic throwing techniques, emphasising hip rotation, balance breaking, and smooth execution. Common throws include O-goshi (large hip throw), Harai-goshi (sweeping hip throw), and Tai-otoshi (body drop). These techniques build on earlier white and yellow belt skills, demanding cleaner footwork and tighter control of the opponent’s centre of gravity. Students also learn variations and counters, deepening their understanding of how to adapt throws under pressure.
Joint manipulation becomes more sophisticated at this level. The syllabus often includes advanced wrist locks, arm bars, and shoulder locks, such as ude-garami and standing ikkyo-style controls. Practitioners develop the ability to flow from a strike or block directly into a lock or takedown, reinforcing the principle of using an opponent’s force against them. Pain-compliance techniques are refined with a focus on safety, accuracy, and correct angles.
Striking combinations increase in complexity, introducing multi-level counters, defensive footwork, and the integration of kicks such as roundhouse, side, and front kicks. Students practise linking strikes smoothly with grappling entries, preparing them for more realistic self-defence scenarios.
Groundwork gains importance as Green Belt students learn transitioning, positional escapes, and simple submissions like straight arm locks and basic chokes. Emphasis is placed on maintaining dominant positions while staying calm and controlled.
Overall, the Green Belt syllabus represents a significant development phase. It enhances confidence, technical fluency, and tactical understanding, preparing students for the more advanced and demanding elements of Japanese Jujitsu that follow.
