The story of Amogha, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, and Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya is a deeply instructive pastime from the Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta (Madhya-līlā, Chapter 15). It shows the Lord’s unlimited compassion—even to those who offend Him—and how a pure devotee’s heart melts even the hardest stone.
Let’s go through it clearly and sweetly 👇
🌸 Setting:
When Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu was staying in Jagannātha Purī, Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya, one of the greatest scholars and a dear devotee, would often invite Him to his home for prasādam.
Sārvabhauma’s son-in-law was Amogha, a young brāhmaṇa, but unfortunately, he was envious and often criticized devotees and even the Lord.
🍚 The Feast:
One day, Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya invited Mahāprabhu for a grand feast.
He served the Lord personally—many delicious items prepared with love and devotion.
When Amogha tried to come into the dining area, Sārvabhauma stopped him, knowing his critical nature.
He said, “Don’t come here! You will make an offense to the Lord.”
But somehow Amogha slipped in and saw the large quantity of prasādam being served to Mahāprabhu. Out of envy, he said:
“How can this sannyāsī eat so much? A renunciant should not eat like this!”
⚡ The Offense and Its Reaction:
Hearing this, Sārvabhauma became furious.
He cried, “O sinful wretch! You have offended the Supreme Lord Himself!”
He took up a stick to beat Amogha, but Amogha ran away.
The Bhaṭṭācārya and his wife, Śatīrā-devī, were heartbroken, fearing Amogha’s offense would destroy him spiritually.
😔 Amogha Falls Ill:
Soon after, Amogha was struck by cholera—a severe, life-threatening disease.
Everyone said it was the reaction of the offense he had committed against Mahāprabhu.
As he lay suffering, Mahāprabhu came to Sārvabhauma’s house again. Seeing everyone sad, He asked what happened. When told, the Lord said compassionately:
“Amogha is a brāhmaṇa; how can the heart of a brāhmaṇa remain envious?
Let all envy be cleansed from his heart!”
Then the merciful Lord went to see Amogha, who was lying unconscious.
💫 The Lord’s Mercy:
Mahāprabhu touched Amogha’s chest, saying:
“Amogha, chant the holy name of Kṛṣṇa!
The heart of a brāhmaṇa is meant for Kṛṣṇa—
not for envy or offense.
May all your sin be destroyed.”
Hearing this, Amogha regained consciousness. He began crying, trembling, and chanting “Kṛṣṇa! Kṛṣṇa!”.
He realized his terrible mistake, fell at the Lord’s feet, and begged forgiveness. Mahāprabhu, in His infinite mercy, forgave him completely and embraced him.
🌺 The Lesson:
After this, Amogha became a humble and pure devotee of Lord Caitanya.
From this pastime we learn:
Criticism of devotees or the Lord is spiritually fatal.
A pure devotee (like Sārvabhauma) and the Lord never hold grudges; they only wish others to be purified.
Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu’s mercy is unlimited—He can transform even the most envious heart into a soft, loving heart for Kṛṣṇa.
