Ensuring the horse has access to high-quality forage with adequate fiber is essential, and some horses may benefit from a reduction in high-sugar feeds or the introduction of a probiotic to help stabilize gut flora. Reducing stress by minimizing environmental changes, maintaining a consistent routine, and providing regular turnout and companionship can also help alleviate symptoms. It’s also important to ensure that the horse’s water is clean, free from contaminants, and consistent in quality, as changes in water can contribute to the problem. Regular parasite control and monitoring for sand ingestion are also important in preventing gut irritation that may lead to FWS.
