The Florida Keys are a series of islands stretching off the bottom of Florida and running for 107 miles. And as late as the year 1911, you couldn’t get there from here. Imagine it, Miami had just recently surpassed the 50 inhabitants mark. And no, that’s not a typo. It took a railway built by Henry Flagler to bring folks down the Florida peninsula to Miami, and then on through the length of the Keys to Key West (technically Mile Marker 0 on US 1).

But that was then and this is now. I lived in Key Largo for years and these are the places to go if you’re a local. (Not that we minded tourists and snowbirds, but local life is better!)

And the “Dark Side”? Well, I needed a hook to get your attention, so I found something dark about each of these. Like a sunset. Get it? Dark, after the sun goes down? No? Bueller?
