Deep beneath the Solomon Sea, a haunting snapshot of World War II lies frozen in time.
On April 7, 1943, while escorting a landing ship carrying future U.S. President John F. Kennedy, the USS Aaron Ward (DD-483) was struck by Japanese dive bombers. After a resilient seven-hour fight to save her, the Aaron Ward sank — taking 20 sailors with her, and 7 more listed as missing in action.
Now resting 70 meters deep near Tulagi Island, she lies upright. Her guns, her scars, and her story preserved beneath the waves. But 87 years later, that story is still unfolding.
As her structure slowly corrodes, this wreck, like many others in the region, poses a growing risk to the pristine marine ecosystem and way of life. We’re here in the Solomon Islands conducting deep-sea surveys to assess how much oil remains on WWII wrecks.
