The third event of the ABM Talks lecture series took place on 29 April 2021. The ABM Talks are held monthly as part of the research project "Seeing Antisemitism Through Law: High Promises or Indeterminacies". The project is affiliated with the law faculty of Justus-Liebig-University Gießen and funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).
Prof. Dr. Eli Salzberger (Faculty of Law, University of Haifa) gave a lecture on "Democracy, the rule of law and freedom of speech" which was commented on by Prof. Dr. Thilo Marauhn (Faculty of Law, Justus-Liebig-University Gießen).
The ABM Talks series is named after lawyer Dr. Abraham Bar Menachem. He was born in 1912 in Gießen-Wieseck and, after studying law, completed his doctorate in 1933 at the then Ludwigs University in Gießen. Due to his Jewish ancestry, the Nazis no longer allowed him to take the Referendarexamen. In 1938, Bar Menachem fled with his wife to Palestine, where he worked as a lawyer and was later elected mayor of the Israeli city of Netanya. Throughout his life, Bar Menachem tirelessly contributed to reconciliation between the Jewish people and Germany. It is our great honour, with the kind permission of his family, to name our lecture series after him.
