As the Union Budget approaches, gajak makers in Morena, Madhya Pradesh, are hoping for tax relief and government support to help expand their traditional sweet industry. Morena’s gajak, made from jaggery and sesame seeds, is famous across India and carries a prestigious GI tag for its distinct quality.
Despite its recognition, traders and residents say the industry has not grown as expected. They are urging the government to reduce or remove GST on gajak, and to provide better market access, including sale points at railway stations and bus stands.
Local traders also want budget provisions for modern machinery and dedicated workspaces, saying this would help scale up production, create jobs and boost exports. With the Budget set to be presented on February 1, the industry is hopeful that targeted measures could give their century-old craft a major push.
