Winter rest is a natural dormancy period in orchid life cycle when orchids take a break from their normal growing and blooming cycle. Orchids need ample sunlight, water and humidity for their normal growth. During winter months daylight becomes shorter, rainfall reduces and humidity becomes less. Orchids do not get their optimum growing conditions during this time.
Hence they minimize and sometimes stop their natural and normal activities. This step makes them conserve energy during the harsh winter months so that they can store their energy to start their normal growing process when temperatures start to warm up again.

Care tips for winter rest of orchids

1 Reduce watering
2 Give them less light
3 No fertilizer

Orchids which need winter rest
Basically all species dendrobium orchids undergo winter rest
Vanda species and hybrids, phalaenopsis species and hybrids, hybrid catttleyas
and oncidiums do not undergo winter rest.
