WIRES rescuer Tanya Arentz told Yahoo News Australia that she received three callouts from NSW’s Inverell in just a matter of hours.

“It’s not normal. I get a lot of rescues, but not three in just over two hours.”

Tanya believes that koala calls are skyrocketing because a lack of trees is forcing the animals to climb street signs and power poles as a last resort.

She explained, “Unless there’s a significant clump of trees, they close moisture, and that’s forcing koalas to move further east into cooler country.”

Until two years ago, rescuers were receiving just one or two callouts a year, but this season’s rescue numbers are expected to eclipse last year’s record of 46.
