DIY Royal Game of Ur 2×4 Build with Hidden Storage | Routed Game Board (Video 7)

In this episode, I take the 2×4 wooden board from Video 5 and transform it into a fully functional storage game set by routing out the underside. All the pieces and dice now fit neatly inside the board itself, turning this into a compact, portable, and polished wooden game.

This is the most advanced build in the series and creates a beautiful, gift-worthy set using simple materials.

🪵 What I Build in This Video

✔ A routed-out storage compartment carved into the bottom of the 2×4 board
✔ Thin plywood bottom panel attached to close the storage area
✔ String/cord wrap to keep the cover secured
✔ Wooden cubes and ripped sticks as game pieces and pips
✔ Clean, sturdy, and portable wooden board
✔ A major craftsmanship upgrade from all previous builds

This design turns the Royal Game of Ur into a self-contained travel game, perfect for display or gifting.

🎲 How to Play the Royal Game of Ur (Quick Rules)

The Royal Game of Ur is a two-player strategy race game with over 4,600 years of history.

Dice (Pips):
• Four sticks with a marked side
• Count how many marked sides land up (0–4)

Objective:
Move all 7 pieces off the board before your opponent.

Movement:
• Move a single piece forward by the number rolled
• Must roll the exact number to exit
• Roll of 0 = no move

Capturing:
• Center lane is shared
• Land on an opponent’s piece to send it back to start

Rosettes:
• Safe spaces — cannot be captured
• Landing on a rosette grants an extra turn

These rules follow the modern interpretation by historian Irving Finkel.
