The Costa Smeralda is a prominent tribute to Italy, designed to showcase the best of Italian style, hospitality, and landmarks to its guests. The ship's design, public spaces, and even its name and deck names are inspired by iconic Italian destinations.
Italian Design & Ambiance
The entire creative project was led by designer Adam D. Tihany to reflect the Italian lifestyle and culture.
Deck Themes: Each of the ship's decks is named after a famous Italian city or place, ranging from Palermo on deck 4 to Trieste on deck 20, taking guests on a "Grand Tour" of Italy.
Public Spaces: The main areas are designed as replicas of traditional Italian squares (piazze):
Piazza di Spagna: A grand, three-deck outdoor staircase at the stern, reminiscent of the Spanish Steps in Rome.
Trastevere: A lively piazza at the ship's bow, featuring bars, shops, a gelateria, and musical entertainment, much like the charming Roman neighborhood.
Colosseo: A central, three-level entertainment area designed to evoke a Roman amphitheater, complete with large screens displaying stories about different ports of call.
"Made in Italy" Furnishings: The ship's interiors feature furniture, lighting, fabrics, and accessories custom-made by 15 different Italian companies, including Molteni&C, Flos, and Poltrona Frau, all ambassadors of Italian excellence. Aboard the ship is the CoDe (Costa Design Museum), the first-ever design museum at sea, showcasing Italian design.
Food and Wine Experience
The onboard dining further enhances the "best of Italy" experience. With 16 restaurants and various "food experience" areas, the ship offers a taste of authentic Italian cuisine, including a Pizzeria, a Teppanyaki restaurant, and a Nutella Café. The bars also collaborate with leading Italian brands like Ferrari Spumante and Aperol Spritz.
Sustainability
Beyond its Italian identity, the Costa Smeralda is a symbol of environmental innovation, being the first ship in the Costa fleet and the global market to be powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), the cleanest fossil fuel available for cruising, which significantly reduces emissions.
