500 Year Old Etz Hayyim Synagogue in Chania Crete, Greece

Описание: Etz Hayyim Synagogue in Chania, Crete dates to the 15th century. For more information, visit http://www.etz-hayyim-hania.org . Originally a Venetian Catholic church, it's located in the heart of the small, centuries-old Jewish neighbourhood of Old Town Chania. In the late 17th century, after the Ottoman conquest of Crete, the damaged building was acquired by Hania’s Jewish community who converted it into a synagogue. Once the community was deported in 1944, Etz Hayyim was looted and desecrated, then occupied by squatters until the mid-1950s. From that time until the mid-1990s, the derelict synagogue served as a repository of neighborhood trash. Since 2010, Etz Hayyim has been operated by a non-profit organization, and serves and supports a very small Jewish community. The synagogue has become a fixture in the religious and socio-cultural life of Hania as a place of prayer, study, recollection, and reconciliation, is used for celebrating various Jewish holidays and non-religious cultural events including lectures, concerts and exhibitions. Its small staff do ongoing research into the history of Cretan Jews, and support the synagogue’s educational outreach program.

There is a small requested donation for visitors, and tours are given by the synagogue’s staff and volunteers.
