Take this English vocabulary quiz for the upper-intermediate level (B2 / C1) and see how many answers you can get right.
Practice collective nouns. Collective nouns are nouns that refer to groups of humans, animals, objects, etc. Collective nouns for groups of animals can sometimes be rather quirky and peculiar, such as a horde of hamsters and an army of caterpillars.
It is common practice not to treat collective nouns as plurals even when they refer to a group. Because collective nouns are treated as single units, they usually take a singular verb, especially in US English. In UK English, the singular and plural verb forms are both acceptable when it comes to collective nouns, with the plural form used when the emphasis is on the individual members of a group acting separately.
Examples:
➤ The management board is responsible for protecting shareholders' interests. (US English and UK English when the board is treated as one unit).
➤ The management board are responsible for protecting shareholders' interests. (mostly UK English when the board is treated as several people acting as individuals).
This English quiz will help you improve your English skills.
You can repeat this test as many times as you want, until you get every answer right.
