Welcome to AF Crime Tidbits. Today, we're counting down the top 3 most audacious art thefts in history.
Number 3: The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum heist in 1990. Thieves posing as police officers stole 13 works of art worth over $500 million, including pieces by Vermeer and Rembrandt. The case remains unsolved to this day.
Number 2: The daring heist at the Louvre in 1911. A painting by the famous artist Edouard Manet called "The Concert" was stolen from the Louvre and remains missing to this day.
Number 1: The bold theft of the Mona Lisa from the Louvre in 1911. The famous painting was stolen by an employee of the museum named Vincenzo Peruggia and it was recovered two years later.
These art thefts were audacious not only due to the value of the artworks stolen but also due to the way they were executed. Some of these thefts remain unsolved till now and they are still a mystery to art experts and law enforcement.
